Restroom signs are the #1 thing inspectors check — and the rules just got more complex. Gender-neutral requirements, California AB1732, pictogram rules, mounting specifics — restroom signs have more nuances than any other ADA sign type. If you’re using the same restroom sign spec from 5 years ago, you might already be out of compliance.
Standard Restroom Sign Requirements
All restroom signs must meet standard ADA requirements: tactile characters, Grade 2 braille, non-glare surface, mounting 48″-60″ AFF on latch side. But restrooms have additional rules.
Gender Designation Rules
Men’s / Women’s: Traditional designation. Text must include the word “Men” or “Women” in tactile characters with braille below.
Unisex / All Gender: Increasingly required or preferred. Many jurisdictions now require at least one all-gender restroom in new construction. Text: “Restroom” or “All Gender Restroom.”
Gender Neutral: Growing trend in progressive jurisdictions. Same requirements as standard — tactile text + braille.
California AB1732
California requires all single-occupancy restrooms to be designated as “All Gender.” If you’re working on California projects, this is mandatory, not optional.
Pictograms on Restroom Signs
ADA allows pictograms (the man/woman figures) but they are not required. The tactile text and braille are required. If you include pictograms, they must be on a field at least 6″ high and cannot conflict with the tactile requirements.
Restroom Sign Placement
- Mount on the latch side of the restroom door, 48″-60″ AFF
- If the restroom has a vestibule, the sign goes on the corridor-side door
- Directional signs (with arrows) do not need braille or tactile characters
